Church Army Gets Fresh

While I was away in New Brunswick, I was at the Church Army National Conference.  Our National Conferences are taking place once every 3 years, which everyone agrees is far too long to be apart.  The theme was: "Fresh Anointing" with George Lings as the guest speaker.  George is the head of Church Army UK’s Sheffield Centre (research unit).

One of the things that George has been researching is the changing trends in how churches are presenting the Gospel to a culture that has rapitly become "post-Christian."  While much of his research has taken place in the UK, he has begun to travel the globe and I’d agree that many of the same trends that he is seeing are occuring here in Canada.  The UK appears to be in the lead at re-evaluating how we present the Gospel and Canada continues to sit by and watch our communities and country move further away from Christ.

It was interesting to hear the various approaches people have taken to become accessible to the people around them…re-examing the definition of "church."  I was excited to hear and read about the risks some people are willing to take to bring the Gospel to the people around them.  It’s caused me to take time to reflect on opportunities that I may be missing.

During Conference, we also had the "Admiting Service to the Office of Evangelist."  This year, 5 students graduated and committed their lives to proclaiming the Gospel.  It was a great service, with many people from across the globe participating (CA International folks were with us too).  Harold Daniel (Suffragan Bishop of Jamaica) preached….65 minute sermon.

And the best, hanging out with friends you haven’t seen in awhile.  Good times!

I’m back!

For the past 3 weeks, I have experienced the pleasures of being away, relaxing, taking a nap whenever I wanted, reading, sitting by the ocean and talking with friends at any point of the day or night.  Two weeks were strictly holidays followed by a week at Church Army National Conference.

Img_1274 I had hoped to be posting while I was away but just before I left, I decided to take a holiday from the computer as well.  AND I only checked my email 3 or 4 times while I was away.  It was very freeing not sitting in front of a screen…but I know many of you were left out and struggled to get by day-to-day without the random thoughts that flow through my head.

My first two weeks away were basically about family — spending time with them, helping out with some things.  It had been awhile since I had been with them all (Dad came out to visit in January), so in a lot of ways it was a stretch.  In large part, because I have grown used to living on my own, coming and going at all hours as I please and not having to worry about checking in with anyone if I wasn’t going to be home for dinner or supper.  (I am pretty sure that "dinner" in the Maritimes means lunch – but I could be wrong.)

Dad and I also went out fishing one day (I caught nothing) and whale watching another day.  I wasn’t sure I was going to feel about the whale watching experience.  I’d always thought that it was only a tourist thing to do…well, I’m a tourist now.  It was GREAT!  We saw one whale (his name was Butternut — we didn’t name him), a bald eagle and several seals.  I’d highly recommend anyone doing this if you’re ever in the Maritimes.

I also got the reconnect with friends whom I hadn’t seen in awhile.  It’s like meeting people all over again, cause so much has happened since you last saw them.  Starbucks became the meeting ground for meeting people…I think profits increased slightly with me being there.

I also had lots of time to refresh and pray about things personal and professional.  I didn’t realize how tired I was until I got there — I basically slept for the first 3 days.  I feel re-energized, re-focused and re-equipped (I know, the last was a stretch).  God is good!

Consensus: HOLIDAYS ROCK!

It’s Official

I am officially on holidays!!!  In a few hours, I leave for New Brunswick to spend 2 weeks visiting family and friends and then a week at the Church Army National Conference.

I’m looking forward to the sweet aroma…salt water, fish and trees.
