for churches with a band, why is the band at the front with everyone looking at them?

for churches with a band, why is the band at the front with everyone looking at them?
any answers/thoughts?
I know a few weeks ago at the Micheal W Smith concert he said he wished he could put a think black curtain up in front of the band so that peoples attention would be on worshipping God, and not so much on him. He was great at turning our “concert” minds into “worship” minds. It was good to hear someone like him say that. although he did say it has taken him too long to get to that point.
