evangelist promoted to glory!

one of church army’s longest serving evangelists died over the weekend.  i had a few opportunities to speak with al – a couple of times in his living room, listening to him share memories and his heart.  at 88, he had more energy than some to on their best day.

here’s the announcement that was circulated:

In the early evening of January 3, 2009 in Brandon MB, Captain Albert Knight completed the race set before him.Albert Knight

In his 89th year, Captain ‘Praise the Lord’ Al had served for over 60 years as an evangelist through Church Army. With Lucille by his side, his missionary-spirit had taken him to serve across the Anglican Diocese of Moosonee, Northern British Columbia, in Manitoba setting up homes for people in need and to Sri Lanka.

Though he aged in body, Knight kept current on new models of sharing faith. He had a way of communicating the love of Jesus in a way all could understand. His faith was contagious, as was his heart for people. He often spoke of the 3 wonderful things: (1) Jesus is wonderful, (2) people are wonderful, (3) and bringing Jesus to people and people to Jesus is wonderful!

This was the heart of Albert Knight. He has been a pillar for all who serve in Church Army, keeping the focus clearly on knowing Jesus and making him known and being a constant demonstration of what a servant-evangelist looks like.

With family by his side, the latter hours of his life included the singing of a favourite hymn  ‘When He cometh’ –  “Like the stars of the morning, His bright crown adorning, they shall shine in their beauty, bright gems for His crown.”

We thank the Lord for the gift of Albert Knight and for the example he has set for all who look to follow Jesus.  A Celebration of Al’s life will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at the Memories Chapel (330 – 18th Street North, Brandon MB) at 11 am.  Memorial donations can be made to Church Army.
